Herdshare Buy-in

Getting access to raw milk in Colorado requires a Herd Share. Basically, you will need to purchase a small ownership percentage in our herd, which will allow you to drink the milk it produces. Subscriptions

To reserve your share of fresh raw milk we offer weekly subscriptions. You choose your pickup day and that reserves ½ gallon of milk (per herd share) produced that day! Choosing a subscription ensures you will have a consistent supply of milk through the main milking season – we will only offer a limited number per day so we know we can provide this service to our customers all season long. You can pay up front to receive a small discount for the full season, or choose a weekly recurring payment. Milking season is approximately 34 weeks long, lasting from March to November.

*Please note that herd share is required to purchase raw milk subscriptions. In our store, you will need to purchase the Herd Share (one-time purchase that will get you access in future years as well) before you will have access to Subscriptions and raw milk products.

Our line of topical skin care products is hand made in small batches using Black Barn Hollow whole raw goat milk and other natural, responsibly sourced ingredients. Our soaps are handmade using cold batch process using goat milk, oils, and essential oils, with no added fragrances or mysterious chemicals. We also offer nourishing lotions, lip balms and even body scrub, all made with the same care using thoughtful recipes.

Herd Share Program

Getting access to raw milk in Colorado requires a Herd Share. Basically, you will need to purchase a small ownership percentage in our herd, which will allow you to drink the milk it produces. Instead of directly purchasing milk, you pay a weekly fee to us to care for the animals and produce the milk.

Why is Herd Share required for Raw Milk?

Pursuant to Colorado law (CRS25-5.5-117), individuals can only consume raw/unpasteurized milk if they are owners of the animals producing it. So, in order for Black Barn Hollow to distribute raw milk, individuals and families must become members of our herd share program. The Bill of Sale and Boarding Agreements (required contracts) allow you to own a portion of our herd and agree to board that portion of the herd at Black Barn Hollow, where we will milk the goats for you and provide you with fresh, raw goats milk.

Some of the terms you will see in our herd share agreement or on our website reflect these laws – for example we charge a “boarding fee” instead of a sale price since we aren’t able to legally sell raw milk.

Raw milk distribution in Colorado is legal with a herd share and is regulated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. “Raw milk” is milk that has not been pasteurized, i.e. heated to a certain temperature for a certain amount of time for the purpose of sterilization. Pasteurization kills any bad bacteria in the milk– but it also denatures milk proteins and enzymes and kills all the naturally occurring probiotics (healthy bacteria) in the milk.

Pasteurization of milk was required by law starting in the 1920s, under the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance, when dairy farms began expanding their operations and commercial farmers and milk distributors had trouble with sanitation and maintaining health standards. Black Barn Hollow is not a factory farm. We are a small farm, milking only a few goats at a time, and working with local, informed customers like you. Keeping our herd small allows us to keep our milk clean, our animals healthy, and our food safety standards high. We test our raw milk frequently and promote safe storage and transportation practices.

How does Herd Share work?

  1. Sign up
    You can purchase a herd share in person or through the website store. When you purchase a share you are agreeing to herd share terms as outlined in the contract.
    As a member, you will be entitled to receive a share of the milk produced by the herd. There is a one-time, $60.00 charge per share, which provides approximately ½ gallon* of milk per week throughout the milking season. Milking season is approximately 34 weeks long and generally runs from March to November.
    If you would like to receive more milk, additional shares can be purchased for $60 each.
    *Since you are purchasing an Ownership interest in the herd, and not a specific quantity of milk, the above is our best estimate of what a particular portion of our herd will provide. There may be more or less milk available based on the herd production in a given week.
  2. Choose a subscription
    Because selling raw milk in Colorado is illegal, we never sell milk. Instead you pay a Boarding Fee to board your portion of the herd with us and we provide a milking service for you in exchange. The boarding fee is calculated per share.
    You can pay this fee upfront, or we can set up a recurring weekly payment.
    Season Subscription: $578 paid once per season (prorated for members joining later as shares are available). Paying up front saves ~6% versus paying weekly.
    Weekly Subscription: $18 recurring payment, charged weekly through the end of the season.
  3. Choose pickup day
    You choose your pickup day to reserve ½ gallon of milk (per share) produced that day! We require pickup reservations because we want you to receive the freshest possible milk, ideally the same day we harvest it from the goats.
  4. Annual Renewal
    We will send out notices to renew subscriptions starting in January, before the milking season starts, so we know how much milk we will have available for new members.

How do pickups work?

When picking up your milk you will need to return your rinsed bottle(s) and lid(s): in order to provide our members with fresh milk in sanitized bottles we need these returned each time you pick up milk.

Pickups are at Black Barn Hollow, Monday through Saturday 10am to 6pm. Please coordinate your pick up time with us. If you can’t make it for some reason, we will hold the order until the next day for you to pick it up. We understand things come up, so any fresh milk not picked up by the second day will be donated back to the herd (e.g. used for baby feeding, raw milk products, or added to our frozen milk supply).
